Typing Regimen

Published: at 01:00 PM

Since I can remember, I have always been a fast typer. I have often attributed a lot of it to my years of study as a musician. The physical practice it takes to master the guitar or bass, for instance, helps the fine motor movement for typing. With that being said, I have been pushing myself to improve the speed and accuracy of my typing, both for prose and coding. Here are the three sites that I use every day for 5-10 minutes of typing every day.

1. ngrams

A big part of typing speed is being able to execute groupings quickly. This site allows you to customize the exercises a lot. I started with bigrams focusing on accuracy and speed, but ultimately trying to view the groupings as a single motion.

2. Monkey Type

I think this is a pretty popular site, so I won’t explain too much. I prefer the word count tests so I don’t accidentally continue typing when the test is done.

3. SpeedTyper.dev

This is what I use for coding typing practice. It takes open source code and gives the user snippets to practice.

With these sites, and lots of practice, I’ve gotten my prose typing to 120-130, with a high score of 143 wpm. My coding, depending on the language, is usually around 60 wpm.
